What is Fertility Evaluation and How it`s Done?

The journey to parenthood is unique for every couple but for some couples it takes little longer to conceive due to certain issues in their fertility potential. However, the good news is that many advanced treatments are available and a holistic approach is what is required to become happy parents to a bundle of joy.

Infertility issues are on the rise in India due to delayed parenthood, lifestyle disorders, unhealthy food habits, obesity, etc. Many people are not aware that fertility reduces with age and are in a state of mind that they will conceive naturally when the time is right, which might not happen always.

If a couple is unable to conceive after trying for a year, they should consult a fertility specialist and get a fertility evaluation done. If the female partner is of 35 years old or older, they are required to consult a fertility specialist within 6 months of trying. A proper history and evaluation of both the spouse can help identify if the issue lies with the male, or the female or with both along with devising a personalized treatment plan. The IVF success rate in Kerala is fairly good and more couples are opting for this procedure to fulfil their dream of parenthood.

Let’s have a quick look at the various fertility tests done for men and women-

The process of evaluating and diagnosing infertility consists of a thorough medical examination with series of tests that analyses the prime fertility factors in male and female partners. Fertility evaluation specifically focus on the diagnosis and offer the treatment that will help couples to fulfil their dream of parenthood.

Fertility Tests for Women

After a through history and physical examination, blood and urine tests are done to check the level of fertility hormones like FSH, LH, Estradiol, AMH, etc. Below are some of the imaging tests that can be done-

Ultrasound-

Ultrasound helps to identify the presence of ovarian cysts and fibroids. It also helps to understand the position of uterus, endometrial pattern, thickness, number of ovarian follicles, ovulation, etc.

Hysterosalpingogram-

This test helps in detecting any sort of blocks in fallopian tubes.

Diagnostic Hysterolaparoscopy-

This test investigates the pelvic area of women to treat cysts, endometriosis, fibroids, uterine anomalies, or any other underlying issue that can affect fertility.

Fertility Tests for Men

Men fertility requires that testicles produce ample healthy sperm, and that the sperms are ejaculated effectively into the female reproductive tract and travels to the egg. Tests for male fertility determines if any of these processes are impaired. A physical examination is done to examine the penis, vas deferens, testes, and other male reproductive organs. The fertility specialist will ask regarding medical history, childhood illness, lifestyle, exposure towards any heavy metals, pesticides or radiation. The following tests are done-

Semen Analysis

This analysis helps to understand the sperm count, motility, shape, etc. Advanced tests like DNA Fragmentation Index, Reactive Oxygen Species Assay, etc can help to examine cases of secondary and unexplained infertility.

Hormone Testing

Hormone testing determines the level of testosterones and other hormones in the body.

Genetic Testing

This testing evaluates if there is a genetic defect which is causing the infertility.

Transrectal Ultrasound

This ultrasound uses high resolution-imaging to examine seminal vesicles, vas deferens, etc.

Scrotal Ultrasound

This ultrasound helps in the examination of scrotum and also identifies any abnormalities in testes.
